I am Creative Director of Taylor-made Communications and a shareholder in the company.
I was a full-time employee of Clarity’s, and I am still closely involved with the company.
Training Speechwriting
I have designed and run three training courses for speechwriters at ABB’s headquarters in Zurich. As well as dealing with speechwriting techniques, these included role-playing exercises to help the speechwriters get good briefs from the executives they work with.
Advice Writing
I prepared standard customer letters for Abbey.
Training Writing
I prepared a corporate style-guide for the ABI, designed to be used online and in printed form.
Editing Writing
My writing here has mainly been for their research and development arm at Sophia Antipolis, in France.
Coaching
I designed and ran one-to-coaching for the Audit Commission’s press office.
Speechwriting Interviewing
I wrote the new chairman’s inaugural speech to a conference audience of 800.
Editing Writing Advice
I have written case studies bringing their work to life, and manuals for staff in the field. I also created a giant family board game for use at festivals and wrote the questions for it.
Coaching
I worked intensively with an economist who has to write reports on long-term economic forecasting using computer modelling. These two subjects – economics and computing – are not easy to make simple and readable, but the economist’s corporate clients needed him to do just that. Luckily this economist, whose first language was not English, quickly made huge improvements.

Journalism Interviewing
In a foray into journalism I wrote a 1000-word feature article about the innovative management style at Geopost. This appeared in the FT’s management section.

I have worked with H&K’s clients on large projects, including an advertorial in the FT to publicise the Skills Summit.

I was the main writer, editor and interviewer for HSBC’s Future of Retirement report in 2006 and 2007.

I advised Inmarsat on its new Intranet on the basis of interviews with the main users. I have also written the instruction manual for their satellite phone.

I have written, edited and advised on several proposals for multi-million pound auditing contracts, working closely with the auditing teams.

I wrote, edited and interviewed for eight reports on risk management, based on research by Ipsos MORI. I also devised and wrote Marsh’s online style guide.

I have worked on major reports for the NHS Modernisation Agency, the NHS Modernisation Board and NPfIT (the IT programme now known as Connecting for Health). The Modernisation Board report involved accompanying board members on fact-finding missions to front-line services and writing them up as engaging case studies.
Editing
Each of the organisations and countries in the Global Campaign for the Health MIllennium Development Goals put forward a case study to be presented to world leaders at a UN summit. These were much too long and had been written by teams of officials who often didn’t speak English as their first language. I rewrote these to length and in readable English without losing any of the main points.

SABMiller wanted to produce a report on the social and environmental effects of its businesses in Africa. I suggested doing this as a day in the life of the company, moving to a different individual in a different country each hour throughout the day, and using that as a way to show what SABMiller is achieving. I then conducted interviews with people in these countries.

Zolfo Cooper is a new company formed by a management buyout of Kroll’s European corporate recovery business. They wanted two brochures: one for clients and one for potential employees. I shaped and wrote these, based on my interviews with the senior leadership and staff.

I have done a lot of work for RBS, including designing and running training courses for its customer complaints team, as well as coaching them individually. I’ve also stepped in to work alongside the complaints team, writing letters to customers.
Most recently I contributed to a communications review, looking at the bank’s strengths and weaknesses and making recommendations.
