Training and Coaching

Training

I have run training courses for, among others, speechwriters at ABB in Zurich, complaint-handlers at the Royal Bank of Scotland in London and Edinburgh, proposal-writers at MSN, and PR people at the Wales Tourist Board in Cardiff.

Coaching

I have also coached people individually, including executives at the Audit Commission, BT, Moody’s KMV and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

I enjoy individual coaching, and am surprised by how quickly people improve. The way I organise it depends on the person I work with. At NatWest and RBS, I tend to see people for a one-hour session every few months, with intensive half-day sessions for people who need extra support. For other organisations, I’ve done more in-depth work with individuals - usually one- or two-hour sessions spread over a few weeks.

I always put a lot of work into reading samples of the person’s writing before each session, allowing me to spot patterns in the things that they do well and badly. After discussing them with my client, I set exercises and come up with techniques to tackle that problem.

What we focus on depends entirely on the client: we sit down together at the beginning and set goals for our work. One client could write accurately and well, but had problems structuring arguments and overcoming writer’s block. Another client was just the opposite, and our work focused on punctuation, sentence structure and vocabulary.

If you think you might be interested in one-to-one coaching, I can meet you to discuss how we could work together in more detail. Email me to arrange a meeting.
